How was I to know Tongue Lashing was a porn flick? I played it thinking it might help me apologize for what I said. To my surprise she was curious, not contemptuous; soon we weren’t watching anymore, though the soundtrack played funky for us.

I guess we’re good again.

As Claire unscrews the wine cap, Rick peers at her bookshelf. “The End of the After. Clever title.”

It’s Affair, you nitwit, not After. But he paid for dinner and has a nice smile, and at least he noticed the books.

“It’s my favorite,” she says, pouring their glasses full.
