I taught myself to sleep
through fevers without dreaming,
to believe only what I was able to confirm
true by holding my breath.
Aspiring to wisdom
meant I had to learn my faith
differently than it seemed from a distance.
The way that Marc Chagall’s “America Windows”
are mostly blue, my survival, too, has been colored
