Organ

Your liver has just arrived from California, Dad

  I see the helicopter outside

Churning on the hospital roof

Bearing the fresh and steaming organ

Direct from whatever catastrophe

It was rescued.

What sacrifice! What elation to set off

From a departed intellect

A liver greater than the sum of its body’s parts, with progressive installations to

  Feed unending beneficiaries

While its legatees feed it in return

Let those livers live in

  Us from

  Us in time

  In time

How cold these reflections are,

How unwillingly they leave my mouth.
